Education
River Institute education programs are closely integrated with in-house research projects and inspire scientific curiosity, connect young people with local ecosystems, and support pathways to careers in science and conservation.

Workshops
School workshops bring students outdoors and into the laboratory to explore freshwater ecosystems and use actual research equipment and methods alongside scientists.
Camps
Educational camps offer unique hands-on learning experiences for young people of all ages, from outdoor explorations and science-themed games and crafts for young children, to opportunities to assist River Institute scientists with ongoing research projects for older students.
Water Festival
Water Festivals are exciting multi-day events full of interactive experiences for primary school students who learn about water and its importance through games, demonstrations, and activities led by high school volunteers.

Outreach
Outreach programs at the River Institute provide communities with access to environmental health information, engage local knowledge and input, and facilitate action to restore and protect freshwater ecosystems.

Symposium
The River Symposium provides a unique platform for researchers, educators, environmental professionals, policymakers, and members of the public to connect and share knowledge in support of freshwater ecosystem conservation.
Speaker Series
The Science + Nature series brings speakers into the community to share knowledge and expertise on a range of topics related to science and the environment.
River Strategy
The Kahnekarónnion (River) Strategy is an initiative dedicated to facilitating inclusive and equitable communication and collaboration along the St. Lawrence River and beyond.
Workshops
Through public workshops, community members have opportunities to experience research in action, contribute to community science and conservation, and learn about land-based practices.

Research
River Institute research focuses on issues that matter to our community, including river biodiversity, water quality, species at risk, and the impacts of contaminants, dams, invasive species, and climate change, with data and findings empowering action, informing government policy, and advancing scientific knowledge.

Survey and Monitoring
Filling critical data gaps related to a range of environmental concerns, from contaminants and water quality, to invasive species and the health of fish and wildlife populations.
Synthesis and Analysis
Collecting and analysing information and data to identify environmental patterns, trends, and data gaps, and provide summaries and in-depth analyses of the current state of a field.
Habitat Restoration
Improving our understanding of how best to improve and protect habitat and ecosystems by conducting on the ground environmental restoration and studying the outcomes.
Applied Research
Providing innovative solutions for technical problems and challenges through proof of concept studies, product testing, literature reviews, and environmental assessments.
Monitoring and Modeling
Using innovative technologies, including drones, satellite imagery, and geographic information systems (GIS), to understand environmental health and processes at large scales.
