Lake St. Francis Nearshore Water Quality Monitoring and Assessment

Additional leads include: Louis Savard, River Institute and Dr. Brian Cumming, Queen’s University. In an ongoing assessment of river health, this project focuses on nutrient inputs and concentrations in the nearshore area of the St. Lawrence River at Lake St. Francis. The project analyzes the concentrations of nutrients and suspended solids near tributaries that discharge into the St Lawrence and maps the flow patterns to determine downstream transport of the discharged materials. In partnership with Queen’s University graduate student Katherine Moir, samples of sediment cores will be analyzed for diatoms to compare past and present-day conditions and to provide evidence of the impacts of stewardship programs and land practices in the watershed. The results are shared with Conservation Authorities and other agencies to help inform management plans, restoration programs, and awareness campaigns.
